What is silicone

Silica gel is a granular porous silica hydrate, by the sodium silicate added acid after washing and drying, mainly used as desiccant and column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography in the adsorbent. Although the name is "gum", it is actually a solid, the appearance is transparent or milky white. Silicone is sometimes referred to as silica, but it is actually a completely different kind of silicon-containing compound in its nature and use.

Silica gel was discovered by scientists in the 1640, and in 1919, Walter A. Patrick, a professor of chemistry at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, applied for a production patent. The First World War was used as an absorbent in gas masks.

The absorbent silica gel is heated under the 120°c for two hours to regenerate.

The silica gel is soaked in the solution of cobalt chloride or ammonium chloride (NH4) 2cocl4), and then can be dried and activated to obtain the color-changing silicone, which can be used to indicate the degree of silica gel absorbing water. This is because anhydrous cobalt chloride (COCL2) is blue, while cobalt chloride hexahydrate (CoCl2 6H2O) is red.

Daily life often encountered silica gel in some paper bags or by a half through membrane resin made of bags, used to absorb water, control humidity, prevent the deterioration of certain items. Silicone bags are generally marked "do not eat." It will stimulate the respiratory system, digestive system, skin and eyes, and some color-changing silicone also contains a humidity indicator, such as cobalt chloride, and cobalt chloride is toxic substances, belonging to the second category of IARC carcinogens, may lead to cancer.
